From Idea to Finished Product: How Custom Apparel Works at Modern Impressions
If you’ve ever ordered custom shirts, hats, or branded merchandise and wondered how they actually get made — this post is for you. At Modern Impressions, we get this question a lot, and the honest answer is: it’s simpler than most people think, and the results are a lot better than many expect.
We’re Decorators, Not Printers
Here’s something most branded merchandise companies don’t tell you upfront: there’s a difference between printing and decorating. Modern Impressions specializes in decoration — we take professionally produced transfers and apply them to your chosen product using commercial heat press equipment. The result is the same sharp, durable, full-color branding you’d get from any print shop, but with the hands-on care of a small local business that’s personally invested in getting it right.
The Three Transfer Methods We Work With
Not all custom decoration is created equal. Depending on your product, design, and quantity, different methods produce different results. Here’s a quick breakdown of what we offer:
DTF (Direct-to-Film) Transfers
DTF is the most versatile option we work with. The design is printed onto a special film and then heat pressed directly onto the fabric. It works on virtually any material — cotton, polyester, blends — and handles complex, full-color artwork with no issues. No minimums, no color limitations, and the finished product is soft to the touch with excellent wash durability. DTF is our go-to for most custom apparel orders.
Sublimation Transfers
Sublimation bonds ink directly into polyester fabric at a molecular level — it won’t crack, peel, or fade. It’s well-suited for drinkware and hard goods where you want the design to wrap edge-to-edge. That said, sublimation requires white or very light-colored fabric, because the base color of the material affects how the final design looks. For apparel, we’ve found DTF consistently delivers more predictable, accurate color results — which is why it’s our default recommendation for decorated clothing, even on performance fabrics.
Screen Print Transfers
Screen print transfers deliver the bold, opaque look of traditional screen printing without the setup minimums. They’re a great fit for simple logos, solid-color designs, and situations where you want that classic ink-on-fabric feel. They also hold up exceptionally well over time and are a cost-effective choice for larger runs.
How the Process Works
Here’s what happens from the moment you reach out to the moment you’re holding your finished merchandise:
- You share your idea or artwork. Send us your logo, design file, or even just a rough concept. If you already have print-ready artwork, great. If not, we offer artwork assistance for an additional fee — we’ll work with you to get it where it needs to be.
- We recommend the right method and product. Based on your design, quantity, and the item you want to decorate, we’ll tell you which transfer method makes the most sense and get you a quote.
- Transfers are produced by our professional printing partner. We work with trusted vendors who produce the transfers to our specifications. This lets us maintain quality control without the overhead of running our own print equipment — which means better pricing for you.
- We apply the transfers with professional heat press equipment. This is where our hands-on work comes in. Every transfer is applied with precision — correct temperature, pressure, and timing — to ensure a clean, lasting result.
- You receive finished, ready-to-use merchandise. No guesswork, no DIY, no surprises.
Why This Model Works Well for You
Because we’re not tied to a single printing method or machine, we can match the right process to your specific job. You’re not getting pushed toward whatever method is most convenient for the shop — you’re getting a recommendation based on what actually makes sense for your product and design.
It also means no minimums. Need five shirts for a team event? Done. Need 200 tumblers for a corporate gift? Also done. We scale to your order, not the other way around.
